The dust of the rebuilt castle still carried the faint, mineral tang of powdered stone.
Six months had passed since the Battle of Hogwarts, yet to Harry, the silence of the corridors felt less like peace and more like a held breath. The castle had been patched together with charms, mortar, and sheer willpower, but the seams still showed if one knew where to look. Every crack in the masonry seemed to hum with the memory of fallen spells.
It was two in the morning when the ceiling of the Gryffindor dormitory began to suffocate him. Harry slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb Ron’s rhythmic snoring, and pulled the Invisibility Cloak over his shoulders. His fingers instinctively brushed the Marauder’s Map tucked inside his robes, though he did not open it. Some habits refused to die; others he simply did not want to cure.
He wandered aimlessly toward the seventh floor. Moonlight spilled through high arched windows, casting pale, bone-white slashes across the stone flags. Most of the portraits were asleep, their painted frames tilting gently in the autumn draft.
Near the tapestry of Barnabas the Barmy, Harry stopped. The wall opposite—where the Room of Requirement had once offered whatever a desperate heart needed—was blank and charred around the edges. The cursed Fiendfyre had scarred the magic there, leaving the masonry cold, dead, and inert.
Or so everyone had thought.
A faint hum vibrated beneath the soles of Harry’s boots. It wasn't loud, but it resonated deep in his chest, sharp and persistent, like the ticking of an invisible clock buried beneath the stone.
Harry drew his wand and kept his voice to a bare murmur: "Lumos."
The tip ignited with soft white light. Where the smooth wall met the floor, a razor-thin hairline fracture glowed with an iridescent, copper sheen. It wasn't a standard hidden door, but an ancient rune—carved deep into the granite baseboard, bleeding tiny sparks of magic that smelled faintly of ozone and old parchment.
He knelt down, letting the Cloak pool around his knees. He raised his wand and touched the copper groove with the hawthorn tip.
The stone didn't grind open like a passage; instead, the wall rippled like disturbed water. A small, hollow cavity revealed itself within the solid rock, holding an iron cylinder no longer than Harry’s forearm. It was bound in heavy silver wire and bore the seal of a raven with its wings spread wide—an archaic emblem predating the modern Hogwarts crest by centuries.
Etched beneath the raven was a single line of script, sharp and unyielding:
To the one who survives the fire: do not rebuild what was meant to break.
Harry reached in, his fingers closing around the cold, oxidized iron. As soon as his skin made contact, a violent jolt of pure magical warmth shot up his arm, making his scar flare with a phantom sting. In his inner pocket, the Marauder’s Map burned hot against his ribs, its dormant ink suddenly swirling to life on its own.
Down the corridor, the faint click of claws and heavy footsteps echoed up the stairs. Harry seized the cylinder, shoved it beneath his robes, and pulled the Cloak tight over his head. He melted back into the shadows just as the yellow, lantern-like eyes of Mrs. Norris rounded the corner.
